Abstract

This book studies the reasons for participation by U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance.

In order to further deepen global environmental governance and promote the global green economic revolution, the role played by the financial sector is crucial. At present, the international community has a profound understanding of the importance of private capital in the financial field. Therefore,it is of great significance to choose to research U.S.-based multinational banks as important representatives of private capital.

By observing the development process of global environmental governance, this book finds a phenomenon worthy of serious analysis. For the last decade and more, the private capital sector represented by the U.S.-based multinational banks has been more and more active in global environmental governance, and the role played by them is becoming more and more important. The achievements of U.S.-based multinational banks in promoting the development of global environmental governance norms and the innovation of green finance should be fully affirmed. Therefore, the core question to be studied in this book is:Why do U.S.-based multinational banks participate in global environmental governance?

Around the core question, the basic process of argument in this book is as follows.First of all,in accordance with the “four phases” theory of green finance proposed by Marcel Jeucken, the main characteristics of the participation of U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance are studied.Secondly, the book analyzes the specific reasons for such participation on three different levels, namely global,U.S.domestic and company.Thirdly, through analyzing the difficulties faced by U.S.-based multinational banks in overcoming the problems caused by ignoring their environmental responsibilities, the book tries to find out the fundamental reasons for participation by U.S.multinational banks in global environmental governance. Finally,in view of the difficulties encountered by U.S.-based multinational banks in the transition to the sustainable banking phase, the book discusses the key reasons for further promoting the participation of U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance.

In the process of analysis, this book mainly applies the level-of-analysis approach of international relations, the historical research method, the case study method and the qualitative research method. This book makes full use of the relevant literature in related disciplines, such as international economic, political and environmental governance, and also collects and collates a large amount of important data.

Through scientific analysis, this book draws the following three important conclusions:Firstly, market factors are the fundamental reasons for the participation of U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance.Secondly, global environmental governance consensus provides active market signals and policy guidance to U.S.-based multinational banks.Thirdly, civil society has made important contributions to the participation of U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance.

This book discusses the reasons for participation by U.S.-based multinational banks in global environmental governance, which introduces a new angle of view for the study of global environmental governance. However, due to the interdisciplinary nature of global environmental governance research and the complexity of this question, the preliminary research done in this book needs to be further developed.
