6.2 Material Preparation and Supply

6.2.1 The quality of scrap to be charged into furnace shall be in accordance with the current national standard Iron and Steel Scrap(GB 4223).

6.2.2 The bulk density of scrap shall not be lower than 0.7t/m3 and the light,medium and heavy scrap shall be in proper proportion.The size and weight of a piece of scrap shall be in accordance with the current national standard Iron and Steel Scrap(GB 4223).

6.2.3 The scrap input to a plant shall be sorted to remove nonferrous metals,organic substances,closed containers and explosive substances and shall be subject to necessary processing depending on the condition of scrap source and quality.The area of the scrap yard shall meet the requirement for consumption in 1-2 months.

6.2.4 The scrap proportioning shop shall be roofed and the area shall meet the requirement for scrap consumption in 3-10 days.The shop shall be equipped with scrap weighing device and the arrangement of grids and pits in the area shall meet the requirement for stacking and storage of scrap with sorting based on the types and sizes.The computer based management should be adopted in scrap storage and proportioning.

6.2.5 For a UHP EAF in an EAF steelmaking shop with scrap as main material,two lines for scrap bucket car shall be provided and the scrap as furnace charge shall be transferred from proportioning shop to the furnace bay of the main shop building.The scrap bucket for furnace charging shall be provided with proper volume and the frequency of charging per heat shall not be more than 2 times.

6.2.6 If DRI is used as furnace charge for EAF melting,it shall be in accordance with the current industrial standard Direct Reduced Iron for Steelmaking(YB/T 4170).If the ratio of DRI is higher than 20%,a storage bin shop shall be provided.The DRI shall be transferred via belt conveyor or other special transfer system to elevated bin in charging bay of EAF shop and then charged into furnace through the furnace roof via mechanical charging system.The continuous charging rate shall be 15kg/min·MW-35kg/min·MW.The DRI(pellet)storage bin shall be provided with a nitrogen protection system.

6.2.7 Hot metal or pig iron of certain ratio should be part of furnace charge and the ratio should be 30%but should not be higher than 60%,and the composition shall be in accordance with the current industrial standard Pig Iron for Steelmaking(YB/T 5296).

6.2.8 It shall be strictly forbidden that special blast furnace is provided specially for hot metal charging of EAF.The transport of hot metal shall conform to the current national standard Safety Regulations for Steelmaking(AQ 2001-2004).

6.2.9 For bulk material for slagging in EAF operation,the particle size shall be 5mm-50mm and the composition shall be in accordance with the current national standard.The lime shall be fresh active lime for metallurgical industry produced in the plant or in adjacent region and the composition shall be in accordance with the current industrial standard Lime for Metallurgical Industry(YB/T 042).

6.2.10 Qualified ferroalloy material shall be purchased for EAF shop.The chemical composition of ferroalloy shall be in accordance with the current relevant national standard and the particle size shall be 5mm-50mm.In the storage,the material shall be stored by classification and protected from mixing and wetting.In the transport,the material shall be protected from rain and water.The ferroalloy crushing facility shall not be located in EAF shop.

6.2.11 For EAF with scrap as main material,radioactive substance detecting instrument shall be provided in the scrap yard.

6.2.12 For EAF with DRI as main material,DRI hot charging and hot conveying technology should be adopted.

6.2.13 For EAF needing to inject a large amount of carbon powder and lime powder,the material should be pneumatically transported with tank car.
